I’ve received both e-mails mentioned here, and both came from elderly people who in most respects are kind and admirable. One was a 90-years-old American airman who helped us defend this country during World War II.

It’s sad that these neo-Nazi jerks exploit them.

I’m in general agreement with your views, Chris, but I will never embrace the sentiment, ‘this is the best country in the world’. It’s inane to say that. It’s the sort of idiotic, belligerent, supremacist thing that would be expressed by bogan whites in utes with Australian flags hanging out the windows on Australia Day. The same people who would say, ‘we don’t want them’, about refugees. You tell me, Chris, why is it necessary to establish your credentials with such a statement?

I was talking about the founding of the nation in 1901, not the ‘settlement’ of Australia 100 years previously. It was a bit of paper that was responsible for creating the actual nation of Australia not a war. And I didn’t say that Australia was not founded on racist notions, such as not counting aboriginals as citizens.

Your right to a certain extent in that land was taken from its rightful owners and colonies were founded. Many aboriginals were killed by conflict and disease. Aboriginals in Tasmania were wiped out until there was not a single full-blooded aboriginal left. But this conflict was not directly related to the founding of the nation. This conflict was between settlers and aboriginals and would have happened regardless of whether it was several colonies or a single nation.

You said that Australia “is one of the few nations that was not founded by conflict.” Man oh man how wrong you are. What do you call the constant skirmishes between European and Aboriginal groups? Or later the systematic genocide of the Indigenous people for their land, all in the name of the British Crown… Some of the bloodiest and most ruthless battles you will ever hear of.

On another note, I’m currently writing an essay in response to that very article. And I must say that I agree. Not with the seemingly racist way of putting across the idea, but with the concept that we are slowly losing certain parts of our way of life in our attempts to accomodate foreign immigrants…

Thank you! Have just received an email of this “speech” from family in USA starting with a large as life photo of Kevin Rudd stating that “Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia , as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks.. etc etc etc. Suffice to say, I won’t be sending it on.
